Why does sadness inspire great art when happiness cannot? When we are feeling down why do we usually seek more sadness? Is it some sort of catharsis? Do we feel more ‘human’ when we let go of our emotions or are we just looking for stories and characters we can relate to? The answer is ‘hope’. Humans strive to look for hope to deal with their problems. Whether you have experienced loss, an impossible love story, shattered dreams, a traumatic past, depression, loneliness, failure, or self-hate, you will probably look for something that can express your thoughts and feelings. Whatever the reason, voicing these emotions can be quite difficult and that’s why art is such a great outlet. We listen to music, paint, write, read, watch shows, movies, and anime so we can let go and forget.
